Description

The inspiring true story of how one company became a model of diversity.Between 1993 and 1995, Denny's Restaurants paid out fifty-four million dollars in settlements to almost 300,000 customers who sued the company claiming racist practices. In 1998, Fortune magazine ranked Denny's No.2 on its list of "The Best Companies for Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics." How did Denny's manage this astonishing turnaround in just three short years and transform itself from a company accused of widespread discrimination to a celebrated model of diversity? The answer, as told in this candid account by Jim Adamson, CEO of Advantica, Denny's parent company, provides a blueprint for how any company should respond if it finds itself in a similar crisis. Adamson also provides valuable guidelines on how to spot and weed out discriminatory hiring and customer service practices before they turn into multimillion-dollar lawsuits and PR nightmares.Jim Adamson (Spartanburg, SC) is CEO of Advantica, the USD2.6 billion parent company of Denny's, and a former CEO of Burger King. Rosemary Bray McNatt (Montclair, NJ) is author of Unafraid of the Dark, a memoir, and a former preview editor for the New York Times Book Review. Robert J. McNatt (Montclair, NJ) is an editor at Business Week, and a former reporter for Reuter's and Crain's New York Business.
