Description

Excerpt from The Graduate Magazine of the University of Kansas, Vol. 5: October, 1906 The world demands men more than it demands flying ma chines, or any other twentieth century patent contrivance, and if this institution turns out real men and real women, it is fulfilling its mission and is in every way well worth the cost. But is it? Or does it simply put on the collar to half baked pupils from our public schools? A universal education must include the five branches physical, moral, intellectual, aesthetic, and religious. As I was coming up Massachusetts street this morning, preparatory to my second climbing of Mount Oread, I noticed an awkward squad of young women in front of me. They had evidently never been shown how to walk; and yet they should be shown at some time, either at home, in the public school, or at the college or university. It is certainly physi cal education to teach people to walk properly. This world walks a lot, and instruction in how to do it is not technical education; and no education is complete that does not include physical culture and good breeding.
