The first class was composed of those who had been trained in the study of the law, and to it belonged the Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, and Herodians. This was the learned class. The other class comprised the unlearned, or those who knew not the law. They were, in fact, the common people, and were looked upon with great contempt by the Pharisees, and had no instruction whatever afforded them, but were left in ignorance. Thus, if you turn to the seventh chapter of the Gospel of St. J ohn, and the forty ninth verse, you will see how the Pharisees viewed them: But this people, who knoweth not the law, are cursed, and in the books of the J ews we find the same contempt expressed for them. Thus, Is there a matter of controversy between a scholar of the wise and one of the people of the land? They adhere to the scholar. The scholars of the wise might not eat in an inn, nor in the streets, nor with the people of the land. Their neglected state appealed largely to the compassion of J ssus. Thus St. Matthew tells as that when J esus saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as.
