Description

Excerpt from The General History of Polybius, Vol. 1 Now, if we pay a proper regard to truth, we shall find it necessary not only to condemn our friends on some occasions, and commend our enemies; but also to corn mend and condemn the same persons, as different circum stances may require. For as it is'not to be imagined, that those who are engaged in great affairs should always be pursuing false or mistaken measures; so neither is it pro bable that their conduct can, at all times, be exem pt from error. A historian, therefore, in all that he relates, should take care to be directed in his judgment by the genuine and real circumstances of every action, without regarding the actors of it. The following examples may serve to shew the truth of these remarks. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
