Description

Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 1: Thermodynamics of the Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Together With Historical Sketch Explosion and Cooling of Gaseous mixtures in large and small vessels and at initial pressures of atmosphere and above. Chapter VIII. Deals for the first time in any work on the subject with Explosion and Cooling in a Cylinder behind a Moving Piston. The recent work by the author enables approximate values to be arrived at for cooling within the internal-combustion Engine Cylinder, apart from tem perature fall due to work done. The last chapter, Chapter IX., discusses the Thermal and Mechanical Efficiency of all the different types of gas engine in use. On this part of the subject more accurate knowledge exists than at any previous time. Important work has been done by English, American, and Continental investigators, and the Research Committees of the Institutions of Civil and Mechanical Engineers have made experiments of great value. All this work has been fully discussed in this chapter. In the present volume the author has attempted to systematise the knowledge existing as to the properties of the working fluid of the Intemal - Combustion Engine, whether using gas, petrol, or heavy oil, so as to enable the engineer and inventor to consider not only mechanical modifications of engine construction, but more profound alterations possible by varying the actions going on in the working fluid. Such variations are, in the author's opinion, necessary to enable light and powerful internal-combustion Engines to be developed for marine work. For this purpose it is necessary that the engineer should be thoroughly familiar with the properties of the working fluid with which he is dealing.
