Bakersfield 1904: When 17-year-old Mary Chin wakes up in the middle of a muddy road after being struck by lightning she has no memory of her past-or what relationship she had with the two dead bodies lying nearby. She flees and begs a job at a local Chinatown laundry and tries to quietly put her life back together until she happens to pick up a violin in a downtown music store. She plays like a virtuoso and becomes the talk of the town but can't remember taking a single lesson. When local reporter Martin Conroy seeks her out to exploit Mary's celebrity and crack the mystery they take to the road for a series of musical triumphs-but soon discover her otherworldly performances involve other strange powers as well.
