Description

This directory provides A-Z coverage of the environment, with thorough definitions and explanations of terms relevant to the environment, including deforestation and global warming. It has a comprehensive directory organized country by country, lists "World Heritage Sites", national nature reserves and parks. A series of maps shows areas of pollution, rainforest and other environmental features, both regionally and world-wide. The book includes an extensive bibliography of relevant periodicals and a "who's who" of leading personalities actively involved in environmental organizations. The first section comprises a series of maps, showing areas of pollution, rainforest and other environmental features, both regionally and world-wide. World maps include - climate, vegetation, population density, food potential, desertification, rainforest, atmospheric pollution and acid rain, the green-house effect, energy production, energy consumption, protected areas and "World Heritage sites", fishing, marine mineral resources, marine pollution and radiation pollution from Chernobyl. The second section is an A-Z glossary section which provides almost 1000 explanations of terms relating to the environment. It includes: definitions of terms most frequently associated with the environment; definitions of more specialist terms; descriptions of organizations, programmes, reports, policies and agreements; major world phenomena; "World Heritage sites", national parks; man-made disasters; and endangered species. Section three features a comprehensive directory organized alphabetically by country, which lists: 3000 governmental and non-governmental organizations, both national and international; key contact names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and a brief outline of the organization's activities and publications. Section four is an extensive bibliographic section which lists relevant periodicals: the title, the editor, address, date of foundation, subject and frequency of the publication. The final section is a who's who of 700 leading personalities actively involved in the environment. It provides biographical details on leading personalities actively involved with environmental issues, and key people who work in environmental organizations.
