Excerpt from The Contributor, Vol. 4: A Monthly Magazine of Home Literature; Represents the Young Men's and Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Associations of the Latter-Day Saints; March, 1883 We were soon visited by the Indian chief Walker and a large horde of war riors. Their visit demonstrated that our policy of settling in a fort was the only safe one. It was absolutely nec essary for our preservation.' On May 10, _1851, President Brigham Young, who had been commissioned Gover nor of Utah, accompanied by Presi dent H. C. Kimball and others, arrived at Centre Creek amid the firing of cannon and other demonstrations of welcome. Governor Young had issued a proclamation ordering an election on the first Monday in August, at which I was elected a member of the Council of the Legislative Assembly. I was com missioned by Postmaster General Hall, on October postmaster of Centre Creek, Iron County, and on the 29th of November, by Governor Young, colonel of cavalry in the Iron Military District. In 1853, I was placed in command of the militia of the southern part of the Territory, and was instructed to take measures for the defense and safety of the inhabitants against the Utah Indians.
