Description

Excerpt from The Clemson College Chronicle, Vol. 8: February, 1905 I have sought to call attention to this great race problem in such a way as to Show the sentiment of race pride, the heinousness of race rivalry, and to Show how it has been intensified time and again. I believe the anglo-saxon race is qualified and determined to work out this problem to a peaceful solution. With the abatement and extinction through the negroes themselves of the crime that first caused lynching, only the old tried common-place virtues are needed on the part of the whites - a deeply humane and Christian spirit; kindness of heart, manner, and conduct; helpfulness in all practical and reasonable ways; readiness to yield and defend all the ordinary civil rights; infinite and unfailing patience of spirit and of act. These virtues exhibited to wards the negroes will do more than all the schools and colleges, churches and missions, to roll back the tide of bitter ness that has risen so high in the last ten years; and will in due time bring about that peacefulness and mutual respect between the two races exactly suited, under normal condi tions, to be useful to each other.
