Description

Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 16: February, 1959 What seems to have confused some Of my critics is my lack Of. Explicit theological jargon. I respond: It is a sad day for preaching when the preacher must wear his theology on his sleeve. Let me now be explicit and critical! Waldo Beach's article preceded mine and ended with a paragraphthat I can unhesitatingly make my own: A major task Of Protestantism is the perennial one - to recover the relevance Of its classical doctrines: the sovereignty of a morally serious God, as much the proctor Of the secret heart as the Lord Of the nations; the doctrine Of justification by grace through faith, as a-guard against both moral legalism and moral anarchy; and the doctrine Of vocation, the calling Of every man, in whatever work, to serve the purposes Of God, in patience, in trust, in faithfulness, amid all the drudgery and meaning les'sness Of finite life. This is not the whole Of Christian theology, but it will suffice to state that moral earnest ness cannot be easily dismissed. I find it highly significant that since I made the address a year ago ecumenical councils have earnestly besought the government to establish a civilian agency for scientific research in outer Space in order to avoid its military domination. Thousands Of scientists have expressed their con sciences On the subject of stopping nuclear-tests. The World Council Of Churches has reiterated its position taken at Evanston' on weapons Of mass destruction and has called on the u.s.a. And the to attempt a cease-test for at least a limited period. Moral pressure has even caused a modification in the foreign policy Of the United States. Every major ecumenical judgment on inter national affairs since Amsterdam has appealed to the idea that the response to communism must be at a pro founder level than that Of military deterrence.
