The A500 Mini reviews

This little console is a must have for anyone lucky enough to have an Amiga back in the day. I've had a lot of reliving some of these old games, some have stood the test of time while others have left me wondering “how did I play this for hours and hours on end as a kid?”

The best feature is you can add your own games, but be warned, not all games work. The entire reason I bought the A500 mini is so I could play the Monkey Island series again, but to my disappointment I have been unable to get any of the games working on the A500

You turn it on and there are Amiga games. Things to know: It will take an xbox wired controller with no configuration needed. Use your own USB C cable if you plan to plug everything into the A500 mini as the included one won't handle the power draw. The included HDMI isn't the best either.

We had an Amiga 500 when I first flatted and loved Speedball 2. This is an emulator so the housing is made to look like an Amiga but it is probably a raspberry PI or similar inside. It comes with a retro looking mouse (but it is optical not a trackball), and a game pad. It DOESNT come with a power adapter probably because it gets shipped around the world. It needs a 1A 5V power supply, I highly recommend getting this one: https://www.jaycar.co.nz/…-1a/p/MP3455 for around $19. Cellphone ones are 2A. There is an extra USB port to allow a real keyboard to connect which for a couple of the loaded games seems to be needed. It comes with a heap of games and for the hard core among us, the internet forums tell you how to add more. Great fun.

The attention to detail for the A500 mini is fantastic. Yes, it is not without faults, but this is version 1 and as with prior products from Retro Games, I'm sure there will be plenty of updates and probably a few games free to download. Side loading of games is simple and there are plenty of online tutorials on how to do this. Lets hope, like the C64, they build a full size one next.

The A500 mini is, in of itself, a fantastic tribute to it's original counterpart, with the classic mouse, support for loading your own, and even a function to replicate how one of the lights on the keyboard lights up. And for the games it comes with, it works splendidly.

On the downside, loading your own can be a bit finicky, and once the rose-tinted spectacles are off, you might not feel the same about the price point, which is perhaps a wee bit high.

Still, for the price of a (rather lavish) night out, you can have a wholesome night in, reliving your formative years.

If you're not here to re-live your past, this is probably not for you, however. In general, Atari spritework can be amazing, but it's not always there, and same for the audio. What's left has typically aged poorly, and you can often see the memory limitations of the time. The hardware itself can be bodged to be a general purpose Amiga emulator, but I wouldn't say it's worth it.

I loved Amiga when I was a kid even though I only had a handful of games for it. Many of the built in games on this didn't appeal that much to me, Chaos Engine, Worms and Speedball are probably the best here but the great thing is the ability to load your own games. Download the software from their website and then google amiga lha's. Its easy to set up and performs well, I had a raspberry pi that emulated Amiga but this is far less hassle :) I'd recommend it to anyone who remembers these computers from back in the day

Brought my very first amiga back in the day, but I regretfully sold it, when I saw the A500 on preorder I knew I had to have it, I just love it now I can play all my favourite games I have so missed playing 😊😊😊

Being an old school Amiga user, excited to hear about this. I had a real A500 with screen etc here, but to get it to a modern standard, was going to cost me a bit. But with this, I can play all my fav Amiga games without any hassle :) Amazing detail on the product, but pity the keyboard is for looks only ;)
