This is one of the ‘classics’. Cited often, and on many lists of great sci-fi books. This is the full, unedited version that was published by Heinlein's wife. The first two thirds of the book is really quite good science fiction, and is a good read. It's interesting and develops into a really good story that you are keen to find out what happens next. Then something happens. Either the author ran out of ideas, got bored, didn't know how to finish the book, I don't know, but the last third really is rather dull. There are several pages of boring diatribe on topics that may interest the author, but has nothing to do with the story. In the prologue, Heinlein's wife says that most of the previous editions of this book had been heavily edited, and that this is the first time it has been published in it's entirety. If the editing included removing most of the last third of the book, then I say, stick with the edited version!

Description

Epic, ambitious and entertaining, "Stranger in a Strange Land" caused controversy and uproar when it was first published in the 1960's, and was the first science-fiction title to appear on The New York Times Book Review 's best-seller list.

Valentine Michael Smith is the stranger. A young human, reared by Martians on Mars, he is brought to Earth where he must adapt not only to the planet's social injustices and its population's foibles, but to its strong gravitational field and rich atmosphere. Still topical and challenging today, and in the great tradition of stories that endure through the power of the author's imagination that stretches from Gulliver's Travels to 1984.

Hugo Award Winner 1962.

Review

'The best of his many books and the best in the genre' -- Washington Post

"In 1939 Heinlein published his first sf short story and became one of the most prolific and influential authors in the genre. Stranger in a Strange Land (1961) is an international best seller and a landmark in more ways than one: it opened the trade best sellers lists to sf writers, breaking down longstanding barriers that will never be seen again. At the same time Stranger became an emblem of the 1960s generation in its iconoclasm and free-love themes. Telling the story of an Earth baby raised by an existing, ancient Martian civilization, the novel often reads as if it were the "Playboy Philosophy" in dialog form. The man/ Martian comes to Earth and broadcasts his ideas by forming his own Church. Heinlein has been rightly criticized for presenting as facts his opinions, which state that organized religion is a sham, authority is generally stupid, young women are all the same, and the common individual is alternately an independent, Ayn Randian-producing genius and the dull-witted part of an ignorant and will-less mob. Yet the book is hard to put down; in its early pages it is a truly masterful sf story. Every library with a fiction collection should have it." Library Journal
