Numerous modifications of an entirely minor character have been made in the manuscript, in order to bring out points, by means of text and printed illustrations, which were presented in the lectures with the help of lantern slides. All significant changes or addi tions made subsequent to the delivery of the lectures are duly indicated in the text.
