Excerpt from Southern Medical Journal, Vol. 7: May, 1914 A great deal has been written on the subject of malaria in the United States, and yet there is lacking a summary study of the prevalence and geographic distribution Of the disease. This work was undertaken by the United States Public Health Service, and on February 28, 1912, I was detailed by the Surgeon - Gen era] of the United States Public Health Serv ice to make a study of the disease in the state of Alabama. On july 8, 1913, the work was extended to include the states of Arkansas. Mississippi, South Carolina, Georgia and Flor ida, and later North Carolina and Tennessee.
