Concerns about the marine environment, the esthetics of coastal plants, earthquake hazards, and various other environmental aspects have created a need to consider inland power plant sites. Thermal powerplants require small quan tities of water of good quality heated to produce steam. The steam is used to run a turbine that drives a generator, thus producing electricity; Large quantities of cooling water are required to condense the steam so that it can be recycled through the system.
