Excerpt from Small Beginnings: Or, the Way to Get On John walter was born at Clapham on the 23d February, 1776. His father, a newspaper proprietor and printer in London, was a man of considerable ability, who, by the time John came to be ready for a profession, had realised some money. It would seem that it was a subject of doubt whether the young man should continue his father's business or go into the Church. The latter alternative was at first adopted; but we are not told how it came to be departed from, though it is likely that John Walter, who was not only a far-seeing but a conscientious youth from the beginning, and had early accustomed himself to look to the connection between means and ends, discovered that there was, in regard to him, a false reckoning. The intention was changed, and the first step taken which was to lead to fortune and renown, by binding him as an apprentice to his father, and learning him the art of composing or setting up types.
