Description

Excerpt from Sidney Sussex College Tms book owes much to the works of the historians of Cambridge, from Fuller to Willis and Clark; but it also contains a great deal of information never before published, which has been derived from our very complete series of College records. The Master of Sidney has given me much assistance by showing me my way about our Registers, Order Books, and other documents. Many biographical details have been gathered from articles in the Encyclo paedia Britannica and the Dictionaiy of National Biography, from separately published lives of members of the College; and from other works, such as Mr. Kingston's East Anglia and the Great Civil War, and Mr. Morris Fuller's Life of Bishop Davenant. In writing chapters v11., viii., and ix., I have found Cooper's Annals particularly useful. I am indebted to the Master of Trinity for the use of some interesting extracts from the unpublished correspondence of Dr. George Butler; to Mr. John Murray for permission to print some passages from the Recreations and Studies of a Country Clergyman in the Eighteenth Centwy; to the proprietors of the Cambridge Review for extracts from that journal; and to Mrs. Yorke of Erddig for the illustration of the Tomb of the Foundress, owing to its position a very difficult subject for a photographer.
