Description

Excerpt from Shop Arithmetic for the Machinist: A Treatise Dealing With Common Machine Shop and Tool-Room Problems and Arithmetical Processes, With Numerous Examples Illustrating Their Practical Application and Methods of Solution This treatise is intended for the men in machine shops and tool rooms whose training has been chiefly along practical lines, and also for students of mechanical subjects desiring a book featuring the problems commonly encountered in shop work. All subjects have been treated as simply as possible and many examples are used to Show exactly how different arithmetical processes are ap plied to practical Shop problems. The advantages and use of formulas are explained and most of the formulas are written out or expressed in words to Show the beginner in mathematical studies, just what each formula actually means. In fact, a special effort has been made to explain all methods in plain, Simple language. Many text-books deal with principles rather than with specific examples, but the shop man not used to solving problems, often finds it difficult to apply these principles. The purpose of this treatise, therefore, is to present the most common machine Shop and toolroom problems and Show clearly, by carefully selected ex amples, how the principles are applied in each case. It is assumed that the student understands such elementary subjects as addi tion, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and fractions and that he is familiar with the use of common mathematical signs for indicating the different operations referred to. If the student is not entirely familiar with the elementary arithmetical processes mentioned, it is advisable for him to study a text-book on arithmetic before attempting the solution Of thc problems giy en in this treatise.
