Description

Excerpt from Shipbuilding and Shipping Record, Vol. 11: A Journal of Shipbuilding, Marine Engineering, Docks, Harbours and Shipping; June 6, 1918 In the second part of the book the author classifies engines into those fitted with carburettors, those fitted with vaporisers and those with atomisers, and considers the different kinds of fuel available for each type. In the type fitted with carburettors and vaporisers. We have all engines working on the Otto cycle, and the question of the mixture of various oils to form motor spirit will be found of the greatest interest, the author expressing the opinion that this question is as yet only in its infancy. Engines fitted with atomisers include both the Diesel and the semi-diesel type, and here the problem of the use of tar oils will, in view of recent developments, be found of the greatest interest. The third part of the book deals with the examination of liquid fuels and with calorimetry, a knowledge of which is of the utmost importance in order to determine the suitability of any particular kind of oil for a given type of engine, or of determining the properties and the calorific value of a proposed substitute. Some useful tables and specifications and an index complete what must be considered as a volume of great value to the ever-growing number of engineers who have to deal with the internal combustion engine or who are in any way interested in its development.
