Though it is true that many, if not most, of the following facts are to be found in modern works or reprints, it is also true that they are so scattered as to be available only after the most prolonged search, and so inaccessible as to be out of reach of one who has not access to a large library. Furthermore, no work of the present kind has yet appeared, if we except the contemporary Survey of London by John -stow. Some recent attempts to accompany prints of old London with letter-press have resulted in inaccuracies that render the works wholly useless to the person who wishes to be well informed. The present writer has attempted with great care to verify his facts and to draw as largely as possible upon contemporary sources.
