This not only for their religious significance, but because of their literary value; an attribute too often lost sight of by the general reader, who does not appreciate the fact that a knowledge of the masterpieces of hymno graphy is as essential to a broad literary education as a knowledge of the master pieces of short-story composition. Were we obliged to search the treasures of the various hymnodies, the task of selecting the seven great hymns - one for each Wednes day in Lent - would be appalling, and years might well be occupied in the task; but, fortunately, the responsibility of selection and the labor of appraisement has been.
