Description

Fifteen Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford Between 1826 and 1843 is a collection of religious sermons presented by the author over a near twenty-year period. Newman later became a Cardinal, and has since been beatified by the Catholic Church. Cardinal Newman's sermons are presented in this text without alteration. The words are included exactly as they were spoken, which lends the text a casual style not often found in religious writing. Brief notes are presented as footnotes and in brackets where necessary, and are primarily used to correct factual errors made in Newman's original sermons. As the title indicates, the book features fifteen sermons, of which there is no central theme. As the sermons were presented to a well educated audience, Newman does afford a good deal of time to the discussion of a relationship between faith and reason, although this is far from the book's sole purpose. Topics discussed include faith and sight, the influences of natural and revealed religion, willfulness, and many more. Newman was a great orator and a conscientious thinker. He was thus the ideal candidate to deliver a series of sermons to the intellectual minds of the University of Oxford. His work here is well researched and expertly delivered. Newman was clearly gifted in forming a bond with his listeners and readers, and his words here are influential and effective. Individuals interested in religious literature will find Fifteen Sermons Preached Before the University of Oxford Between 1826 and 1843 to be a worthwhile read. Newman's words are enlightening and relevant more than 150 years after they were originally spoken. This is thus a recommended text for anybody interested in the subject matter, and particularly practicing Catholics.
