The Holy Scriptures prove, in the most Copious and conclusive manner, that Jesus Christ made a true and pro per atonement for human guilt; that, in the strictest and most absolute sense of the terms, he died in the room of sinners; that his sacrifice was an ample satisfaction to the law which man had violated, and made it consistent with the perfections and government of Jehovah to pardon our transgressions, and to receive us into his favour. This atonement forms the grand distinction between Christian ity and all other religions. We recognise no religion as of divine authority, which does not point to the cross, and say, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world 1.
