Excited and eager for the new life before her, she was at the same time almost ill with remorse for the trouble her going might cause Aaron, and also with fright at the prospect of the many strangers she must meet. He realized with a heaviness at his heart that the only thing that sustained and inspired her in carrying out her determination to go to school was her infatuation for him. He foresaw the suffering ahead of the poor girl, her homesickness, her loneliness, her disappointed anticipations. And there could be no compensation for her in her work, for she had no fondness for study. All the way to town he battled with his temptation to go with her from the city out to the school and see her safe in her new home. He knew how glad she would be if he offered to do it, and how grateful. It made him sick to think of abandoning her when they reached Lancaster, letting her face alone, in all her shrinking timidity and ignorance, a new life amid alien people. Yet, all things considered, it seemed the wiser course. So at Lancaster he put her on the Millersville car, and bade her good-by, resisting with some effort the pleading of her beautiful eyes and the piteous quivering of her lips. His voice he strove to make cheerfully matter-of-fact. "Don't forget, Sabina, if ever you need me, telephone to me, and I shall be glad to do anything I can for you.' "Yes, 'Gustus," she whispered....
