Excerpt from Report, 1868 The Committee on Accounts respectfully submit the fol lowing statement of the expenditures for Public School pur poses for the year 1867; also the number of teachers and scholars in the various schools during the Fall term, ending Nov. 25th, 1867, and at the close of the year. The com mittee deem it proper to remark that, having had charge of the accounts Only since nov. 19th, it is possible the state ment of expenditures may not be entirely accurate; but, having carefully prepared the same, they are satisfied that, if any errors do exist, they are of but trifling importance. It is due to some of the Principals Of the Public Schools to state, that experience has proved the fact that, in certain localities, the children attending the schools are more de structive of books than in other sections. Especially is this the case ih those schools which are located upon the borders Of the city; and with all the care exercised by the teachers, it seems impossible to prevent this. The decrease in the number of scholars in Male Grammar Schools Nos. 1 and 15 was owing to transfers to the new Grammar School no. 18.
