These were used until 1893, when a great improvement was effected by the introduction Of glow-lamps fixed to the readers' tables, the arc lamps being reduced to about 300 candle-power each. Two years later the shelves accessible to readers on the ground floor were lighted with glow-lamps, aided by reflectors, which effectually light the books on the shelves Without causing any glare.
