The driver did not see the other train till he was close to it, and he ran into it at the rate of forty miles an hour. Many people were badly injured, and the "dreadful accident" will never be forgotten by those who were in it. Now, the people in the train were in H danger. They needed help; the labourer could have helped them by rousing the guard and stopping the express. But he did not do it; and, though he knew their danger, he left them to their fate. He did not possess that kindness of heart, that thoughtful love, that was needed to save other people from danger. Thus we see that the mere fact of our danger did not bring Jesus to be our Saviour. It was His great love that made Him come to our help. Many years ago, a number of fishermen put off in their boats to sea. The sea was calm, the day was fine, and the men hoped to have a pleasant time, and catch many fishes. But one of the old men knew the signs of weather well, and he said, "Lads, we musn't go fur, or stay away long to-day. There'll be some heavy squalls as the night comes on, and no boat will be safe." So the men agreed that they would only take a short sail. But, as they caught many fishes, and became deeply interested in their work, they drifted farther out to sea than they intended; and, as they returned, were caught by the storm. The cruel waves dashed the boats hither and thither; and at length drove them against the rocky shore, breaking them to pieces and drowning many of the men.
