Our People and Our History, originally published in French in Montreal in 1911 and translated to English in 1973, records the lives of some fifty Creoles living in New Orleans during the mid-nineteenth century. Including biographies of Creole doctors, lawyers, teachers, musicians, artists, and writers, this book demonstrates that Creoles excelled in all major professions and played an extraordinary role in both the cultural and political history of Louisiana. Although Rodolphe Lucien Desdunes, the author, received little formal education, he was articulate and observant. This series of biographies served as his dedicated effort to create due credit to, understanding of, and rich insights into the Creole people.

Author Biography:

Sister Dorothea Olga McCants belonged to the Daughters of the Cross religious order at St. Vincent Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana. She also translated and edited They Came to Louisiana: Letters of a Catholic Mission, 1854-1882 (LSU Press, 1970).
