Description

Excerpt from Original Documents Relating to the Hostages of John, King of France: And the Treaty of Bretigny, in 1360 It was in 1355, nine years after the successful issue of the battle of Crecy (near Abbeville) in 1346, (which en tailed such renown on Edward, the Black Prince), and eight from the capture of Calais in 1347, that the truce, with the French, extended from time to time, having expired, the war was renewed in that year. The determined and persistent object of King Edward III., had been to establish his claim to the throne of France, occupied at this time by John, son of Philip de Valois, but many circumstances, especially the Salique law, which from the first had virtually excluded him, tended to make him now regard the establishment of his claim beyond reasonable expectation, so that for the cession of A[quitaine with all its sovereign rights, a proposition his plenipotentiaries were instructed to put forward, he pro fessed himself ready to end a war, which had been mainly signalized by the victory of Crecy.
