Description

Excerpt from Ophthalmic Literature, Vol. 5: November, 1915 It is very true that examinations have been largely directed to ascertaining a candidate's ability to remember and use words, and that such ability is something very different from fitness for ophthalmic practice. It is quite true that examinations can be given, and have been given, in which the recent student actively crammed for the test, although he is quite incompetent for medical practice, makes a better showing than the thoroughly competent, experienced medical practitioner. But that such examinations are possible, or have been, is very far from proving that they are the only kind possible, or that they need to be repeated or perpetuated. A recent writer points out that medical examinations may reach a very close approximation to the tests for actual practice; and where carefully worked out they have done so, as the crammed student has found to his sorrow. Even the written examination which seems to afford the ideal opportunities for cramming can be so modified as to make it an im portant test of real fitness for practice by wisely framed questions. Let us contrast the kind of question that favors the crammed student with one that tests the real ability to focus acquired knowledge on a practical condition.
