Description

Excerpt from On the Wine Trade and Wine Duties: A Lecture, Delivered at King's College, London, February 26th, 1866 It must be observed that in 1858 and 1859 the disease in the vine greatly reduced 'the supply all over the world, but even ex cluding those years the increase is considerable. The imports from France Show a uniform increase; those from Portugal have been very intermittent, as have those from Spain. In the South African wine there has been a decided falling off ever since the change of duties. Italy figures most favourably, and. In the im ports of Rhenish wines there has been a considerable increase. The progress in the consumption of wine has been st1ll more striking within the last ten years. Whereas in the ten years ending 1859 the quantity consumed averaged gallons, last year it reached gallons, the qua11t1ty per head of the population having increased from 22 gallons to Degrees41 gallons. The table on page 10 shows the consumption of all the d1fferent qualities of wine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
