Description

Birmingham during the Great War has been described as Britain's pre-eminent centre of manufacturing industries, its factories and workshops produced arms, ammunition, shells and components of all sorts making it a powerhouse for the War Effort. The men of Birmingham formed many battalions of the Warwickshire Regiment and the city became a major medical centre giving over public and private buildings to become military hospitals. The suburbs accommodated army camps and even an RFC aerodrome for pilot training. Field Marshal Sir John French, Commander in Chief of the British Armies in France and Flanders described the war as "a battle between Krupps - and Birmingham". The book takes the reader through each area of the city with fascinating information on the significance of individual buildings, the stories of their use and contribution as well as the people who lived and worked in them. A book both for reference and for planning a visit of one's own - "On the Trail of the Great War in Birmingham".
