Excerpt from Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural History, the University of Kansas: June 8, 1982 Subsequently, mechanical preparation of many Specimens of the same species yielded these ossicles in normal or inverse relief under different angles according to the breaks of the nodules. It became obvious that these elements are present in most specimens, and that their dimensions vary within precise limits. This paper deals with the origin of these ossicles, the reasons for their variability, and why they have never been observed until now in other vertebrates besides this N orth-american palaeoniscid.
