Another 07 EA Sports release that feels pretty much like 06… but hey, if
it ain't broke. Using the two analog sticks for movement, shooting and passing
is the big point of difference here – it seems awkward at first, but by the
3rd period it feels far more natural than the old analog/button combos.
My main complaint is that player and team creation is still a lackluster affair,
with a pathetic amount of face models to work from, and no easy way of
customizing your jerseys or team logos (don't even get me started on play by
play names).
That aside, NHL07 is still one of the most beautiful looking sports games on the
market, and you can really lose yourself in a match. The big hits are still
there as well as the satisfying punch-ups. Occasionally your team AI can get in
the way, but on the whole they do a pretty good job of setting up for one-timers
and defense.
A great blend of arcade and simulation. Even if you know zero about the game of
hockey, I recommend giving it a try once it hits the bargain bins.
