Meet Nathalia. According to her, she has the most embarrassing dad in the whole world.
He makes terrible food, thinks that everything (including himself) is funny, drives around in an old rusty van nicknamed the Atomic Dustbin, doesn't have a real job (he writes the jokes that go into Christmas crackers), and is the reason why Nathalia has the surname Bumole (which her dad says is pronounced Bew-mow-lay, but actually sounds more like Bum hole to Nathalia).
When Nathalia moves to a new school, she wants nothing more than a fresh start away from her embarrassing dad. But when he tries to get involved with Nathalia's new school through their parents committee, it looks like Nathalia's dream may be going downhill fast…
Although this book has a female main character, I think that it would be popular with both girls AND boys.
Girls will enjoy reading about Nathalia's quest to fit in and try to make friends at her new school, which reminds me a lot of Greg Heffley from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, while boys will enjoy hearing about all the embarrassing things Nathalia's dad does, like having the Atomic Dustbin catch fire in the school parking lot, or organising a school trip that quickly goes wrong.
I also think that this book will be popular with any kids who think that they have embarrassing parents as well, even if they aren't as bad as Nathalia's dad!
Overall, this is a funny and heartfelt illustrated novel, and a perfect choice for fans of books like DIary of a Wimpy Kid.
