It would have been better that I should have issued it immediately after my return to England, at the end of 187 5. But, the fact was, the result of that journey made me pretty sick of Persia; then the distractions consequent on a visit home, after a long period of years; my having soon after undertaken another journey; and finally, the calls of my ordinary duty, have combined to put it off from day to day. I am, therefore, conscious of the disadvantage under which it now appears. The only merit I claim for it is, that it is a soldier's plain unvarnished account of the inci dents and accidents of travel in a country which, I hope, will continue to interest all Englishmen.
