Thickening being used exclusively to indicate the letter r, the student can see at a glance that if the sl be made light it means also chisel, and the context easily decides between chisel and chiseller. We take this opportunity of calling attention to the fact that for reporting purposes, and all shorthand work in general, a pencil is much preferable to a pen. We have had a pencil specially manu factured for our own use, which makes light and heavy strokes with a facility hitherto unknown. A character traced upwards can be thickened with ease, and the pencils are so durable that they last as long as six ordinary penny pencils.
