Excerpt from Memorials Dear old Hawkey has been telling me that when I was about six years old, it sometimes happened that after a great game of romps, when we all went late and tired to bed, Hawkey used to say to us, There, you need not say your prayers to-night, as you are so tired. Just say God bless papa and mamma, and jump into bed.' But I was never to be persuaded into this summary way of despatching that duty, but would answer, Oh, no, Hawkey; let me say my prayers. And she would agree, and I would kneel down and say the Lord's Prayer. So merciful was the gracious Lord in drawing me to Him in my earliest days. Oh, that I had never resisted and grieved His Holy Spirit Hawkey says no one ever taught us anything about religion but herself, and she was not learned. All she could do was to teach us the Lord's Prayer and the Belief, which we repeated every morning and evening, the first kneeling and the other standing. As dear Hawkey could not explain these formularies to us, our ideas of their meaning were vague enough, and Minnie did not understand the words of the Belief till she married. I have indistinct recollections of tears in bed at night connected with religion, and some very happy thoughts of God.
