Seven years later, when the Northwestern Ordinance was enacted by Congress, the Northwest meant the territory north of the Ohio and east of the Mississippi, for, a foreign fiag waved over the vast unknown region beyond. When this region was, by a magnificent stroke of policy added to the national domain, the West was recognized as in cluding a few straggling settlements on the further side of the great river, and so, the ever advancing wave of migration and settlement has pushed the West further and still further onward, until the meaning of the term has become lost in its immensity.
