Description

Excerpt from Memoirs of Great Britain and Ireland: From the Dissolution of the Last Parliament of Charles II, Until the Sea-Battle of La Hogue I have generally quoted the papers, of which I have either the originals or the copies in my polfefli on; others, although of the highelt authority of all, I have not quoted, becaufe I have no extrae'rs. Since the firlt edition of the Memorrs was publifhed m Scot land, Ihave fortunately fallen upon a collection of pa pers in London, which vouchialmofi all the 'new'fae'ts that are to be'found in them. The pa'peits I.m'ean 'are {hole of the late Mr, Carte, now ln' the pofl'eflion of Mr. Jerne'gan, who married his widow. They confift of'very full from the memoirs of James the Second, now in the Scots College at Paris, Written by that Prince's own hand, and of many ori gi'nal'fiate-papers, and copres of others of the court of St. Ger'mains. The extracts from the memoirs are in Mf.' Car'te's hand-writing, and he had'an order for all th'efe different papers from the Stuart'ifa'milyy I could have cailly made a fecond volume of the papers in my hands; but am not fond of taxing the public for what only the curious 1n the hil'tory of their Coun try care to read. However, if the public exprefs any defire to fee them, they {hall {till be publilhed and, ifi receive Barrillon' s difpatches foon enough, they fl1all _be printed with the red.
