At the first onset of the War in August 1914, hundreds of our students volunteered for active service in the Scottish battalions, which speedily won undying fame in France and Flanders; the Roll of the Fallen shows at what heavy cost. Their example was followed by hundreds more, month by month, as the struggle went on. Teachers and students flocked into action on land, at sea, and in the air, until the University had its representatives in almost every branch of the services and on every field of warfare.
