No definite schedule of hours has been formulated for a training course. However, it is hoped that sufficient time will be devoted to the study of this manual to guar antee the minimum requirements. Instructors will find this manual useful in the presentation of the training program. The protection of forests in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is of paramount importance. Forest protection is a community welfare proposition. During war-time, when timber needs for. War purposes exceed peace-time needs, it is doubly important that men prepare themselves for Forest Fire Fighters Service. It is an important function -of Civilian Defense on the home front. This manual was prepared by George H. Wirt, Chief, Division of Protection, Department of Forest and Waters, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and Director of Forest Fire Fighters Service for the State Council of Defense. It was reviewed and edited by staff mem bers of the Public Service Institute, Department of Public Instruction, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
