His parents were respectable, and in good circumstances, for they were able to give their son a liberal education. In his youth he was put to the grammar school of Haddington, and when he had acquired the rudiments of the Latin, he was sent to the University Of St. Andrews, at that time the most celebrated seminary in the kingdom.
