Description

The author explores the questions of semiology in both classical and contemporary drama, rangely widely over the works of the Ancient Greeks, Marivaux, Artaud, Brecht, Brook, Handke and Wilson. Beginning with an assessment of the current state of semiology, Pavis turns to the issues of gesture and body language, the reception of text and performance, and some examples of semiotic analysis. He argues that semiology is concerned with the "discourse of staging", with the way in which the performance is marked out by the dialogue and the visual and musical elements.
