Description

Excerpt from La Princesse Lointaine That is all we know of Rudel's life; nothing in this account, save a few chronological puzzles as yet unsolved, prevents our accepting it as true or, at least, as probable. Yet some critics of great authority, among others Gaston Paris (revue Histori gue, vol. 53, have endeavored to prove that Rudel merely joined the crusade of 1147 and probably died in Palestine; and that, aided by what remains of his literary compositions, min strels who sang his songs prefaced the latter with the interesting commentary that he went to Syria in search of a lady of whose beauty and charms pilgrims had told, and with whom he had be come violently enamored. This touching legend, according to the same authority, was afterward perpetuated by the biographer. There is, however, nothing but circumstantial evidence in support of such a view, and we can only say that there is discrepancy in the dates at which the events are said to have occurred, and that the story lacks the elements of likelihood.
