Description

Hurricane Katrina was the costliest natural disaster, and one of the five deadliest hurricanes in the history of the U.S. At least 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods. Total property damage was estimated at $108 billion. Investigation of the responses from federal, state and local governments resulted in the resignation of FEMA director Michael D. Brown and criticism of President George W. Bush. The Associated Press was there with in depth reporting and spectacular photography.

Author Biography:

Cain Burdeau joined The Associated Press' New Orleans bureau in 2000. He has covered a wide range of news stories in Louisiana and the South -- from politics to disasters. He has specialized, though, in studying Louisiana's coastal land loss crisis, the marine world of the Gulf of Mexico, the BP oil spill and Hurricane Katrina. He continues to work out of the New Orleans bureau.
