Description

Flaubert's manner of tale telling started one tradition, of Henry James, Conrad, Mann, and Faulkner, though they could not equal him in beauty of style or sharpness of irony. Chekhov's manner is also to be found in Joyce's "Dubliners" and many much more inferior writers such as Somerset Maugham, Hemingway, Katherine Porter, Updike, who collectively returned the story to the pre-Chekhovian level of Frenchmen Maupassant and Merimee. Borges in "Ficciones," subsuming Melville, Hawthorne, Poe, and Kafka, was the third manner. "Judith Mezzelstone" represents a fourth. Two stories have been removed and three added.
