The colony of Virginia was the first to introduce the cultivation of the fragrant weed, and John Rolfe, the husband of Pocha bontas, inaugurated its systematic cultivation in the colony in the year 1612. In the year 1616 Captain George Yeardly, Deputy Governor, first directed the attention of the colo nists to planting it for profit, showing that its culture prom ised large returns, and from this time on there was an enormous and rapid increase in the annual amount grown.
