In the Shadow Iwrote, contrast ing it with the light. It came to me then, almost as a revelation, that the North and the South were two families in one house - two peoples under one government; each believing that it thoroughly understood the other, and - resting in that belief - becoming hourly more and more estranged. SO I wrote, until the pages grew into volumes, and the thoughts which were once my own the impalpable companions Of my day-life and dream-life - entered into other hearts, and be came the common property Of mankind. I meet them here and there, and recognize them in strange new garbs. They masquerade before me in others' lives and words, and I sometimes smile at the antics Of the winged truants whom I would not recall even if I could. I do not judge them, I cannot.
