Description

Excerpt from Index, 1959 Winter brings the winds and snow. Many familiar landmarks are buried under a blanket of white. However, activities do not suffer. During the day, students find the college pond attractive for some tension-easing skating. Before long, Christmas vacation becomes the object toward which the eyes of all are turned. But a few are rapidly realizing the awful truth that finals will occur a mere two weeks after those wild New Year's Eve parties. Finals arrive. Minds are turned away from thoughts of all else. Words like hatch, movie, and party are replaced with words like multiple choice grade and scale. With the end of finals there is a mass exodus from the campus. The face of the student body has been slightly altered by this semester break. In place of those who have not returned are new, but soon to be familiar, people. The beautiful winter scenery is utilized as a background for the Winter Carnival Weekend. Snow and color are the building materials of the Junior class who, with skill and imagination, attempt to surpass the previous year's Carnival. Each year brings new and exciting innovations into use. With few exceptions, all activity, athletic, social, and organizational, are confined to the indoors. Spring at Umieland has always been a period in which the campus, as well as nature, have broken through their winter shell. Baseball and track come into the sports spotlight. The culmination of all fraternity and sorority activity is reached when the annual Greek Ball is held. We are constantly reminded that the Uni versity is growing rapidly when April showers bring things other than flowers. But the warm weather makes everything seem right. Various social groups, in an attempt to make use of the remaining school days hold formals, picnics, and outdoor get-togethers. Cadets find that only a two-hour spring review prevents them from returning their uniform to its resting place in the stables. All at once, finals are here again. To most it will seem like only yester day that they completed the last set of finals. After this ordeal, only a week remains before the senior class will receive their diplomas and obtain their long awaited goal graduation For the rest, a time of retirement has arrived. Summer school is now the prospect for a few members of the staff and some students. Meanwhile, the sound of new construction goes on.
